OKODEE-MMOWERE - the talons of the eagle, ‘sports’

Strength, bravery and power - just a few of the qualities this symbol represents.

Past

Very little if any attention was paid to sports, the focus was more on tribal pursuits and keeping the peace. Work and family remained the top priorities for most Ghanaians.

Present

As Western influences continue to infiltrate Ghana, Ghanaians are rethinking how they spend their spare time. A slow introduction to leisure pursuits and in particular sport as a way to pass the time, begins to take a bigger chunk of their time. The idea that sport can be beneficial to a healthy lifestyle starts to become very popular. In fact more and more students use this opportunity to gain prestigious Sports Scholarships, landing them the dream of studying abroad. This trend captures the attention of the Ghanaian government and businesses as they start to back sport in a really big way, in particular Ghana’s Black Stars football players.

Prospective

The rise of Ghana’s national football team has quite frankly taken the world by surprise. And not surprisingly put Ghana on the international sports map. Sport which was once ignored has become the nation’s passion. However, sponsorship is still seriously lacking, despite this Ghana’s conscientious athletes continue to forge a way forward.

Pure strength is required to run in the ‘race’, power and endurance to complete it. I’d like to play on the qualities of this powerfully built bird of prey, focusing on its talons. The talons of eagles are strong sharp and designed to carry things, mainly prey.

Where am I going with this?

I like to focus on sport that is not only exciting and fun to watch but causes a change in the athlete. The kind of change that takes place on the inside of a person; causing them to carry their sporting prowess so excellently that they affect all those around them.

The blogs will act as a gallery of my exploration of sports men and women with real character. The eagle stands head and shoulders above all other birds so too will the sportsmen/women that I will spotlight once a month. I hope to stir enough interest to encourage readers to share their passion of sports with me and come up with ways the two countries (Britain and Ghana) can learn from each other.

So let’s aim for the goal and run the race set before us.
